10 tips for greater security in the workplace

Without the presence of security, opportunistic thieves consider office buildings, unguarded shops and businesses as easy targets.

As a leading security company in Hampshire, Venture Security prides itself on crime-prevention and the protection of your property and assets. With the summer months rolling in and the window of opportunity for thieves widening (quite literally!), we’ve compiled our top ten tips for keeping your workplace safe.

1) Delegate key jobs: As the weather gets warmer, ensure that someone you trust is responsible for closing and locking all windows and doors at the end of the day.

2) Lone worker protection: Don’t ever leave one person working on their own, be it late in the evening or at weekends. Anyone watching your premises will know who is manning the building and having one employee on site leaves both them and your company vulnerable.

3) Locks and unlocks: Is someone you trust in charge of keys? Are they a good timekeeper? What about when you’re on holiday? Make sure you have a strict policy in place and never give a key or code to a new employee or anyone you don’t know well.

4) CCTV: Not only are cameras a great deterrent, they also offer legal protection in case of a break-in. Having a CCTV system and signs in place tell people they are being watched.

5) Response: So, there’s an alarm in place, but do you have a rapid response team to deal with a situation, should it arise? You can’t be around all the time so make sure you have someone ‘on call’ at all times – that ‘someone’ needs to abstain from alcohol when on duty in case of a problem.

6) Guard your assets: Get in the habit of locking up laptops, work mobiles and other expensive equipment when you are out of the office. Have these electronically tagged and where possible, locked with a key code too.

8) Paperwork: Keep important documents stored in a lockable cabinet – if anything gets stolen, having your important documentation to hand will ease the headache.

9) Audit: Check for any weaknesses in your building’s security - a blind spot on the cameras, a shared entrance, an unmanned reception - all these things can go unnoticed but are actually an accident waiting to happen. Spot the potential problems and act on them by conducting a regular security audit.

10) Keep an eye on local news: If burglaries are occurring regularly in your region, it’s time to step up security. Networking is a great idea as being part of a local group will help gain a broader understanding of security issues in your area, plus forging a relationship with your building management and other tenants.

The above tips will help you to be better equipped to protect your workplace and prevent disruption to your business.
