How do you get a job in security?

Thinking of working in security but not sure if it will be right for you?

The security industry is booming right now and with demand high for quality security personnel, there’s never been a better time to make a move into the industry.

Whether you’re seeking seasonal work; a part time job alongside your university studies; you’re looking for a full time career change after leaving the police or armed forces; or you simply want to set yourself on a new career path; security has a lot to offer.

So, why is it such a great industry to join?

  1. The wide range of roles available

There are so many different types of security roles to choose from based on what your preferences are when it comes to working hours, travel and whether you enjoy interaction with the general public. There are also loads of options, whether you’re looking for a full time, part time or casual position.

For example, Static Guards are typically based at a single location and may support a business with functions such as access control and concierge duties.  While Mobile Patrol Officers tend to work independently and will visit a number of different sites throughout the night to check everything is as it should be.  Then there are City Centre Security Officers who will patrol towns and city centres to help tackle antisocial behaviour and act as a visible point of contact for retailers, residents and visitors.

  1. No two days are ever the same

Ask anyone who works in security what a typical day is like and they will tell you - there is no such thing as a typical day! No two days are ever the same in security and that kind of variety can be very appealing. It also means that working in security takes a certain kind of person – someone who can remain calm under pressure and in the face of the unexpected.

Here at Venture, we always like to give our team members the opportunity to try new things, as well as supporting them with career development. For example, our officers will be invited to join our event security team at one of the many venues and events they look after across the year. This has included Glastonbury, Forest Live, Boomtown, House Festival, the London Marathon and many more! We also have a long-standing relationship with the amazing team at Salisbury Racecourse.

Being a security officer can also mean you get to work at some world famous (and truly spectacular) locations, including Heritage sites such as Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral and the Roman Baths, helping protect them for generations to come.

What do you need to do to work in security?

If you’ve decided security is for you – what now?

To get started, you’ll need a valid SIA licence (unless you simply want a casual supporting role, such as being an event steward, in which case you won’t need one).

An SIA licence is a legal requirement to work in the security sector. Failing to obtain an SIA licence and accepting security work without one is a criminal offence, punishable by up to six months in prison or a £5,000 fine.

Even if you’ve previously held security posts outside of the UK, you will still need to be issued an SIA licence to legally be employed in the security sector within the United Kingdom. Fortunately, acquiring an SIA licence isn’t too difficult.

You’ll need to first undergo a Security Industry Authority (SIA) accredited training course to learn the ins and outs of working in the security sector. To apply, you need to be 18, eligible to work in the UK, and pass an ID and criminal records check. You’ll also need to disclose aspects of your mental health and be prepared to share your GP medical records if requested.

SIA training courses take between 4 days to a week, and you’ll need to pass an exam in order to apply for your SIA licence at the end. Licences can take around a month to be issued and are valid for three years. There is also a (currently £190) fee involved for issuing your licence, so this, along with the time it takes to train, will need to be factored in.

Skills and attributes that are important when working in security:
  • Can you keep a cool head under pressure?
  • Are you physically fit and in good health?
  • Are you able to work both independently and as part of a team?
  • Are you a clear communicator?
  • Are you a good timekeeper, reliable and committed?
