Summer Crime Prevention Advice

The warmer summer months are here and sadly that can often mean an increase in crime. So, what's the best way to reduce your risk of being a target?

The summer months signal warmer weather and peak holiday season, but the temperature isn’t the only thing that can rise this time year. Crimes, such as burglary and trespass, can also increase as changes in people’s behaviour present new opportunities for would-be criminals.

And it’s not just homeowners who are advised to take greater care. Businesses are also at greater risk with company vehicles and metal being common targets, as well as the likelihood of unwanted visitors on site.

So, what can you do about it?

Venture’s summer security tips
  • Think about open doors and windows - It’s important to keep tabs on which doors and windows have been unlocked and opened. Thieves will be on the look-out for any quick grab and run situations. If a window is open and they can see something like a bag or purse inside, they’re likely to have a go. Try and keep ground floor entrances and openings shut when no-one is in the room. Remember to double check any windows that may be hidden from sight, such as behind blinds.
  • Write a check list – This may sound like overkill, but there’s no better way to ensure you never forget anything. Ensure you have everything covered off before you leave a building empty. Use a daily checklist to remind everyone to check the windows are closed and any doors are locked, before they leave. Think about these issues anytime the property may be empty, even if it’s just when popping to the shop to grab some lunch.
  • Don’t leave ladders lying about - If windows are being cleaned or other construction work or DIY is going in, it’s important to make sure there aren’t any ladders or tools left lying around. These items can make it even easier for would-be criminals to access a property.
  • Keep hedges and fences low – Avoid anything that may provide screening and hide what a criminal is up to. The more hidden they are, the longer the window of opportunity they may have to break in or clear your stuff out! For homeowners, using something as simple as gravel can be very effective for announcing the arrival of someone coming close to the house.
  • Check boundaries are secure - Make sure property boundaries are in good condition, to reduce the risk of unauthorised access. The harder it is to drive vehicles on and off a site the better, and the less chance you’ll have unwanted visitors. You also don’t want to give burglars a free ride to load up and clear off with your assets.
  • Have the right security measures in place - Going out, or away? Make sure you have the right security measures in place and that they are in full working order. For example, think about alarms, CCTV, security lights and mobile patrols, which can all be highly effective deterrents and stop, or at the very least slow, a potential criminal in their tracks.
