Venture Security commits to Stamp Out Spiking

Venture Security is proud to have become a member of Stamp Out Spiking, a leading charity dedicated to tackling the increasing incidents of spiking across the UK and Worldwide.

A recent report by Stamp out Spiking reveals that seven in 10 young adults have been affected by drink spiking in the UK, with other types of spiking also on the rise.

Being a first line of defence in many venues, events and public spaces, security officers have an important role to play in the fight against spiking, and here at Venture that’s a responsibility we take very seriously.

Paul Howe, Managing Director, Venture Security, commented: “This partnership underscores Venture’s commitment to enhancing public safety and initiatives that protect individuals from the dangers of spiking. The charity is doing a fantastic job of raising awareness, campaigning for change, and helping those who have been impacted by spiking, and we look forward to supporting them in their efforts.”

About Stamp Out Spiking

Stamp Out Spiking is committed to raising awareness and providing support to victims of spiking. The charity’s mission is to educate the public about the various forms of spiking, while advocating for stronger legal measures against these crimes.

As well as offering victim support and running public awareness campaigns, the charity provides training and resources for industry, ensuring staff are well-equipped to handle and prevent spiking incidents.

What is spiking?

Spiking refers to the act of administering – or causing someone to administer - drugs, alcohol or other substances without their knowledge or consent. This can lead to severe effects for the individual, such as dizziness, confusion or even unconsciousness, and can put the victim at risk of other crimes, including theft and assault.

Stamp Out Spiking’s 2024 survey found that 84% of spiking cases were through drink spiking but other methods of spiking, such as needle and vape spiking, have also seen an increase in recent years.

Spiking can happen anywhere, to anyone, at any time. While an overwhelming 92% of victims are female, men can also be targeted.

The UK government gives the following as examples of spiking:

  • Putting alcohol into someone’s drink without their knowledge or permission
  • Putting prescription or illegal drugs into someone’s alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink without their knowledge or permission
  • Injecting someone with prescription or illegal drugs without their knowledge or permission
  • Putting prescription or illegal drugs into someone’s food without their knowledge or permission
  • Putting prescription or illegal drugs into someone’s cigarette or vape without their knowledge or permission

The importance of security officers in tackling spiking

Security officers have a vital role to play in the fight against spiking. As the first line of defence in many public venues, security officers are uniquely positioned to identify and respond to suspected spiking incidents and other suspicious activities.

Here are some key responsibilities of security personnel in this context:

  1. Vigilance: Security officers must be vigilant, monitoring for signs of distress or unusual behaviour that could indicate spiking.
  2. Provide an immediate response: In the event of a suspected spiking incident, security officers have established protocols to follow to ensure the safety of the victim. This includes providing immediate assistance and contacting emergency services if necessary.
  3. Collaboration with authorities: Security officers will work closely with local police and medical professionals to ensure a coordinated response to spiking incidents.

How Venture’s officers are helping tackle spiking

At Venture, all our officers are thoroughly trained to identify spiking. They are highly vigilant in identifying and responding to signs of vulnerability. They will offer assistance to anyone who appears lost or isolated and intervene if someone seems to be receiving unwanted attention. They will also watch for signs of predatory behaviour, such as individuals frequently surveying their surroundings or hovering near another person’s drink.

If a spiking incident is reported or a vulnerable person is identified, our officers will prioritise the victim's welfare and safety. They will provide first aid or call an ambulance if necessary and continuously assess the situation for further danger.
